When it comes to Tim Coppens, we’re happy to be able to say, “Barneys was there first!” We know a good thing when we see it, so when Tim Coppens came knocking on the door of Vice President of Men’s Designer Collections Jay Bell back in 2011, we were thrilled to snap up the designer’s first offering and watch with admiration as the pieces sold out. And as Coppens’ work continues to evolve, we’re getting in on the ground floor of his newest offering: womenswear.
“I’ve always had girls who came to the shows, just friends of mine and friends of the brand, who liked the pieces and wanted to wear them, but ended up wearing the men’s stuff,” Coppens tells The Window. “I’d shown a few women’s pieces even though they weren’t available to retail, so there was already a reaction and an expectation in place.” And with the debut of his women’s collection at Barneys, female fans no longer have to steal from the guys.
“There’s some crossover between elements of what I do for men and what I’m doing for women,” he says. “There’s a really interesting interplay between materials and construction for both, and both draw from the same athletic sensibility. I wanted the women’s collection to feel like an extension of what I do for menswear, but in more feminine shapes.”
And even though the spring collections are just delivering, Tim is keeping future seasons in mind. Having just shown for Fall 2015, he’s keeping the ball rolling in terms of both his inspirations and the final outcome. “The Fall 2015 collection draws a lot of inspiration from the musician Ian Brown—his style, the imagery of his record sleeves, and his music. There’s a major nod to English hooliganism through different materials and details like the shapes of the pockets.” Looking even further ahead? “I’m gradually moving a bit more toward tailored pieces and different silhouettes. That’s not to say you’ll necessarily be seeing suits, but I’d like to do my version of something like that.”
Take a look at Tim’s first women’s offerings, below, and make sure to snatch up a few pieces today so that you, too, can say you got in on the ground floor!
