For Pre-Fall, Ashley and Mary-Kate, designers behind cult-favorite brand The Rowbrought a chilled-out charm to their minimal, elegant sportswear. “When we started designing, we were having a real California Reflection,” Mary-Kate Olsen told us. The ‘60s and ‘70s surf vibe can be seen in easy tunics, sunbaked tones, zip closures, and a generally lighter feel. And, of course, the designers’ signature clean lines and artful layering are at the core.

And fresh from The Row’s CFDA Award for Accessories Designer of the Year, we couldn’t help but notice new bag silhouettes, which Ashley Olsen told us are a new take on how to wear bags for evening. Here, the designers comment on their Pre-Fall inspirations and designing with purpose.

“We took a lot of inspiration from the beaches and beach culture of the 1960s. The starting point of the collection came from the images of LeRoy Grannis, a photographer whose work we love.” – Mary-Kate Olsen

“This collection is so thoughtful. It’s both active and casual. It’s luxe and couture. We don’t design just for the sake of designing. We really put our heart and soul into what we do. Hopefully people will see this sentiment reflected in the clothing.” – Ashley Olsen

“When it comes to our handbags, there¹s always an evening mentality in everything that we do. We did create new styles that can be adopted for evening. With our bags, there’s always an understated casualness to it—depending on how you wear it. You can wear one of our exotic skins to dinner with messy hair, and it still has this evening mentality.” - Ashley Olsen
