Jason Stalvey’s mood board for his eponymous line is filled with imagery of glamorous women, glossy nightlife, and New York City architecture. There’s also a touch of edge to his inspiration, with flashes of neon lights and models navigating downtown city streets.
The exceptionally crafted handbag collection has drawn a worldly clientele, from exotic collectors to fashion’s most-beloved It girls. When asked about the brand’s appeal, Jason says, “I think it has to do with functionality and the design aesthetic. As important as it is for a bag to be fashionable, these girls are always on the move and need something that fits easily into their daily routine.” Gigi Hadid, for example, is often photographed toting her Stalvey mini satchel, effortlessly paired with fashion-forward denim. He notes, “The street style vibe is a bit unexpected for an exotics brand, but the bag’s clean look pairs well with any outfit.”
In 2014, Jason Stalvey left a successful career in medicine to pursue fashion with the launch of his collection at Barneys New York. At the time, Stalvey had been searching for the perfect alligator-skin duffle bag, and when that hunt didn’t prove fruitful, he created his own. His passion for exotic handbags has only grown, and all his products are handmade in the U.S. with impeccable craftsmanship using the finest materials.
With an on-the-town mentality, we decided to take the handbags for a spin, culminating in a wind down at the Gramercy Park Hotel. The hotel’s velvet textures and rich red hues perfectly complemented the new Stalvey alligator styles. “Up until this point, our bags mostly consisted of moodier colors, but now there’s a vivid jolt with the Kiwi, Ferrari-style Red, and Lilac,” says Jason.
The vibrant colors add effortless edge to our festive season ensembles, while the easy, roomier-than-expected shapes—like the classic top-handle satchel—offer functionality. The luxurious wares are each finished with lacquered edging, a lambskin interior, and either 24k gold-plated or palladium-plated brass hardware. And for us, our own finishing touch came in the form of playful Paintbox manicures.
In his own bag, Stalvey always carries La Mer moisturizer, a portable charger, headphones, and a cheeky silver measuring tape—in case inspiration strikes from an object. A true believer of luxury with ease, Stalvey proves that exotic bags can be used for any occasion, and most importantly, should be enjoyed.
