1. POLISHED PUNK
It’s true: The ’80s are back, and this season there’s no shortage of acid wash and silver sequins. Luckily, this time around, the pairing feels totally modern thanks to sleeker, more flattering silhouettes. You can tame the bold look with demure flats (we love this slingback style from Manolo Blahnik), but we recommend you fully commit to the Studio 54 vibe with a party-ready pair of strappy sandals.
2. SHADES OF BEIGE
Beige is a classic color that sets a serene tone, and even more so in smooth silks and satins. Nili Lotan captures this season’s “nude” palette perfectly, in styles that range from ivory to rich chocolate, all featuring the New York designer’s signature easy draping. You can stay with the minimalist theme and skip the accessories, or take the look in a more office-friendly direction by mixing it up with a camisole underpinning and contrasting jewelry. (Leather bracelets and naturally shaped pendants go nicely.)
3. MENSWEAR TROUSERS
High waist, flat front, creased legs. That might sound like the boring pants your dad wore to the office every day, but thanks to designers like Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga, this season’s adaptations of classic men’s styles are as bold as they are feminine, thanks to twists like unexpected waist detailing and edgy front slits. You can pair your trousers with a classic white shirt to complete the masculine mood, or make it the anchor of an eveningwear look by pairing with a ultra-feminine top.
4. UTILITARIAN MINIMALISM
The workwear look has been kicking around for a few seasons now, but this season’s version takes elevated-utilitarian to new heights with head-to-toe styling. The key to dressing up this basic style: keeping the lines clean meets monochrome pairings. Don’t be afraid to stray from the usual utility palette of denim and khaki with playful hues like this sky blue skirt and jacket combo from Helmut Lang.
5. PAISLEY PRINTS
The enduring power of paisley might be owing to its origins as a symbol of life and eternity in Eastern cultures. The print, which was prevalent on the SS19 runways, indeed does conjure faraway places, making it an evocative choice for spring and summer when travel is on the brain. Whether styled as a blouse or full dress, when you wear a print this bold, make it the centerpiece and keep accessories to a minimum (a simple chain and hoop earrings are perfect). Monochrome shoes are preferable: Match yours to the darkest hue in the paisley swirl.
