Up until recently, I had almost no brand loyalty when it came to skincare, bath, and body products. As a fashion editor, I’d sometimes get gifted lovely products and often reap the benefits of beauty editor handouts and office cosmetic stock closet charity sales. My bathroom brimmed with an enviable number of top-shelf creams and serums—although the inconsistency left my skin sort of meh and my medicine cabinet cluttered.

The recent decision to move in with my partner pushed me to take stock of my collected inventory, cut through all the clutter, really think about what essentials I needed in my everyday skincare and shower routine and, most importantly, what actually worked for me. And that’s how I ended up finding, trying, and loving Malin + Goetz.

I’ve always been aware of Malin + Goetz, the New York-based, family-owned-and-operated, natural (without being hippy-dippy), sensitive skincare “apothecary lab.” I had walked by the store in Chelsea, happily used Malin + Goetz handsoap in other people’s bathrooms, admired the clean packaging—I’m also a bit of typeface-nerd, if that’s a thing—but never really immersed myself in the full line.

On a mission to the Barneys Foundation beauty floor, I did what I always do when deciding on which skin and bath products actually make into my bathroom: the smell test. Yep, the important checklist of ingredients, value, promised results … none of that matters if it doesn’t pass the sniff inspection. For the sake of this “Ode To” post, I’d like to be able to tell a harrowing tale of hours spent toiling away with Barneys associates waiting on me hand and foot while I walked around smelling every product on the floor, but I was honestly drawn to Malin + Goetz pretty quickly (not that the Barneys associates wouldn’t have done their due diligence in assisting me achieve my goal). It was the packaging that caught my eye.

Clean, utilitarian in a way, unisex in look and ingredients touted. Since one of my objectives was to streamline our newly shared bathroom, I liked the idea of having one set of products we would both love and use. Not that I would go ’round changin’ for anyone—I don’t really like overtly feminine/floral scents and products anyway. While the packaging first drew me in, the ingredients, boldly touted, were ones I liked. Peppermint, eucalyptus, sage, rum! Also, some items (the moisturizer, SPF, and face cream) had virtually no smell at all. Lack of scent is sometimes a plus for me when it comes to my dry, sensitive skin.

Now that the Malin + Goetz line passed the visual and scent tests with flying colors, I decided to purchase the Eucalyptus Shower Gel and give it a try. Armed with one 16 oz gentle-foaming naturally-purifying extremely promising Malin + Goetz product—I became devoted to the whole line the old fashioned way—oodles of free sample testers courtesy of the Barneys associate who knew I’d be back to stock my new bathroom.

MALIN + GOETZ Eucalyptus Deodorant / MALIN + GOETZ Eucalyptus Shower Gel

This is the product that first got me hooked. The Eucalyptus Shower Gel will instantly turn your bathroom into a spa. The natural eucalyptus is awakening in the most pleasant way—sort of like fresh, leafy caffeine. It smells crazy good.

MALIN + GOETZ Peppermint Shampoo / MALIN + GOETZ Rum Body Wash / MALIN + GOETZ Vitamin B5 Body Moisturizer

Peppermint shampoo is a great way to keep the invigorating morning shower routine momentum going. It’s got just a bit of tingle to it that feels nice on the scalp.

MALIN + GOETZ Vitamin E Shaving Cream

The Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Shaving Cream is a godsend for sensitive, dry skin. It feels like putting on cool moisturizer and doesn’t burn, stick, gunk up, or do anything bad to your skin or razor. It’s so easy and painless—the way shaving should be, but so often is not.

MALIN + GOETZ Hair Pomade / MALIN + GOETZ Sage Styling Cream

OK, so this product was purchased for my boyfriend’s use since I do have Oribe Root Touch-Up Spray, Dry Texturizing Spray, and Anti-Humidity Spray on fairly heavy rotation. I have, though, found myself reaching for his Malin + Goetz Sage Styling Cream to tame flyaways during prime summer ponytail season.

MALING + GOETZ Facial Cleansing OilMALIN + GOETZ Glycolic Acid Pads / MALIN + GOETZ Replenishing Face Serum

The Resurfacing Glycolic Pads were actually given to me to test. While my skin is clear, I sometimes get an uneven skin tone or dry patchiness seasonally. I was told with confidence I’d be happy with the results from using the physician-grade glycolic acid pads and it’s true. My skin looks brighter and more clear with use, and I can see it working in process. The directions suggest using 1 – 3 times per week, but I’ve found that once does the trick for me.

Sadly, Mr. Greenberg is not available for purchase. If I could, I would offer a link to buy, but alas he is one of a kind. You can, however experience his lovely pug mug by following Malin + Goetz on Instagram at @malinandgoetz.
