The heights of high fashion ascend no further than arrivals to the red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit—or simply the Met Gala, as it’s known to those to assembled last night to celebrate the opening of the retrospective honoring designer Rei Kawakubo and her incomparable creations for Comme des Garçons. From movie stars to models, designers to debutantes, the fashion-forward crowd was encouraged to embrace an avant-garde dress code for fashion’s biggest night, and they surely didn’t disappoint. Here, we’ve selected a few of our favorites. Scroll on for a closer look at the dresses that dazzled before stopping into the Met to view the exhibition for yourself, which is on view now through September 4, 2017. And if the pieces at the museum aren’t enough to sate your Comme cravings, be sure to stop by Barneys Madison Avenue or Downtown flagships to see our latest window installations, which currently also feature the works of Rei Kawakubo alongside sculptures by the inimitable artist, Louise Bourgeois.

Top honors go to Rihanna, who not only embraced the theme of the night by wearing one of Kawakubo’s creations for Comme des Garçons, but also pulled off the look like no mere mortal could.

Sky-high slit, up-to-there boots, and a sensible veil make for an unforgettable Ralph Lauren look as shown by model Lily Aldridge.

Liu Wen shows that it can pay to be a little off—at least when it comes to this denim and sheer gown by Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh.

Always among our favorites, Rick Owens and Michele Lamy never fail to bring their distinctive personalities to any event.

We knew we loved this Thom Browne parka-dress when we saw it as the finale piece in the designer’s runway show earlier this year. What we didn’t know was that Solange Knowles would be able to rock with the runway’s accompanying ice skate-inspired heels.
