There are few items in a man’s wardrobe more versatile and essential than his denim. Whether tossing on the perfectly broken-in denim jacket for a Saturday night or pairing biker-inspired leather with his favorite jeans, a guy’s denim can be just as individual as he is. So when it comes to finding a defining denim style, who better to turn to than the experts—our men’s buyers. We asked these in-the-know authorities not only what the season’s must-have pieces are, but also how they’ll be styling them.

“There is a lot of focus on personal style and making an item your own—fashion today is all about nuances,” senior buyer Drew Caldwell tells us. “In these times of street style and Instragram, everyone is looking to be noticed for being unique; what they are wearing, and most importantly how they are wearing it.”

Icons Of Counterculture

“Rock and roll iconography, streetwear, and grunge intermingle in an unpredictable, out-of-the-box, and indefinable style,” says denim associate buyer Chelsea Sutrisno. “The denim allows the wearer to use his attitude and style to define the look.”

The Anti-Fit

This vintage-inspired cut, which Caldwell has termed the ‘anti-fit,’ is a slim-fitting style that goes beyond the skinny jean.

The Trucker Jacket

“Personally, I am happy to see the return of the denim trucker jacket in a big way,” Caldwell says. “I’ll be wearing mine cropped and a little slouchy, like this Fear Of God number.”

The Classics Get Some Handywork

This is a “classic, hardcore, skinny black jean,” Caldwell says of the perennial style that’s been updated for the season thanks to details like US-made fabric and hand-stitched embroidery on the back. Paired with a distressed denim jacket, the stand-by staples get a fresh spin.

Patchwork Perfected

Playing up the grunge influence of plaid flannel seen elsewhere this season, patchwork is being seen on jackets, vest, and jeans alike.

A Bit Of A Stretch

Cool can be comfy when edgy denim is enhanced with a bit of stretch. Bonus point to these Nudie jeans, where that comfort is further enhanced by the use of all organic cotton.

Damaged Goods

Caldwell says that, when it comes to denim this spring, it’s all about three magic words: “damaged, damaged, damaged.” The resurgence of distressed denim with new techniques and washes adds personalization to your favorite jeans.

Good As Grunge

“When you take a look at spring’s coolest brands, it’s all about elevated grunge,” Sutrisno says. “The anti-fashion attitude from the ’90s gets a modern day upgrade.”
