Talk about collaboration: New outerwear label Kassl is produced by a team that includes the designers for Graanmarkt 13; Camille Serra, the former creative director for Joseph and designer for Maison Margiela; and Gijsje Ribbens, former fashion editor for Vogue Nederland, among others. Building on experience and expertise, the brand works as a collective, emphasizing the critical role each person plays in ensuring the company’s success.
In a time when many designers cast a wide net, Kassl launched with a very specific vision: The project is based entirely on a vintage fishermen’s parka found in a secondhand shop in Amsterdam. Aiming to be a true representation of fashion meets function, Kassl’s coats are crafted of sturdy, water-repellent, breathable fabrics that are skillfully enhanced to bring an element of modernity to the traditional style. Each member of the team shares ideas about new colors, techniques, and details, which are explored and embraced as long as they support the brand’s two pillars: a comfortable fit and quality fabrics. Here, we take a closer look at the specifics that make this season’s styles true standouts.
The Modern Trench
The detail: A neutral beige hue is the most classic of raincoat colorways. Its understated design allows the focus to be on the coat’s modern cut, as well as functional details such as its silvertone-ring-backed buttons for durability and sealed interior seams—elements that make this brand so covetable.
Daily Wearer Jacket
The detail: Kassl developed this white coat’s oil-effect finish in homage to the authentic utility fabric found in European fishermen’s gear. The wide collar and back flap add dimension to the classic style.
The detail: As with the oil-white version, Kassl’s raincoat in coated black cotton canvas is based on the authentic fishermen’s utility fabric. Black-on-black front buttons and an easy drape give it a sleek, chic street spin.
The Glam Slam
The detail: What’s the best way to transform an ultrafunctional piece into a fashion statement? Add red, of course. The high-gloss, candy-apple coating on this Kassl style brings city glamour to the gritty world of fishing wharfs.
The detail: A high-shine finish brings a fascinating play of light and shade to the olive version of Kassl’s coat. Cut to fall just below the hips, the versatile style offers daytime ease…or nighttime drama.
Future-Perfect Evening Coat
The detail: It’s futuristic, it’s retro. It’s functional, it’s evening-worthy. The seeming contradictions of Kassl’s silver trench work precisely because it always comes back to quality construction. Flap front pockets and a covered button packet are reminders that the sultry style’s first job is to keep you dry.
