What’s better than a winter wonderland? A winter wonderland that includes penguins. Want to kick it up another notch? Throw in a few cutting-edge luxury cars courtesy of Lexus, and it becomes a wonderland sure to brighten anyone’s season.

As part of the Chillin’ Out holiday windows at our Madison Avenue flagship, Barneys’ creative team, led by creative director Dennis Freedman, partnered with the innovative minds at Lexus to conceive of “Arctic Chase,” a fast-paced, vibrant display that embodies the energy of the holidays. Beginning with the idea of Penny, our penguin mascot, the window is a modern reimagining of the classic kids’ toy that sends penguins on an endless loop around a track and staircase. The update comes via glittery, crystal-encrusted Lexus cars, an abstracted chrome mountainscape, and a cutting-edge anime-inspired short.

Perched atop 3D-printed exact scale replicas of the Lexus IS, GS F, and RC F models, three penguins race around an icily translucent track created by custom racetrack-builder Gary Gerding. A grown-up version of the toys many of us played with as kids, Gerding  took the racetrack to a new level by crafting it in clear polycarbonate, a first for him.

Penny, our penguin heroine, races around the track atop her custom crystal-embellished Lexus.

The dizzyingly fast cars run their perpetual race set to an animated short by Invisible Light Network. The video, “Stay Cool,” tells the story of our penguin hero racing against her opponents amid an imaginary world of ice formations, city structures, and ski lodges. “Our concept was that what you see in the window is almost a trailer for a much longer movie,” Invisible Light Network’s Elliot Kealoha Blanchard told us. “You’re getting a piece of a larger story. We took the concept of an arctic world and racing, and we added elements found in classic racing anime. The racers are competing with each other, but they’re also sort of friends—plus, there are the larger-than-life challenges you see in anime racing.” The animation plays larger-than-life thanks to crisp display screens by Christie THREE SIXTY and is scored with custom techno music by composer Amnon Freidlin.

Can’t get enough of the racing action? You can also bring the excitement home thanks to an exclusive limited-edition Lexus RC F remote-controlled car we’re offering just in time for gifting season. The 1/10 scale means that this baby is far larger than your normal remote-controlled car, allowing it to have details like fully functioning headlights and taillights, high-grip racing tires, and a stunning silver and black finish. And the fun doesn’t end there—the Madison Avenue window’s racetrack is being replicated in our Beverly Hills store, where it will be joined by the new 2016 Lexus LX SUV. Customers in that store will have the chance to enter to win a Barneys gift card ranging from $100 to $1000.
