After countless all-night cram sessions and endless cups of coffee, the time has finally come for the graduating class of 2016 to close their books and move on to the newest chapter of life. But first, what to wear? In consideration of this all-important milestone, we invited five stylish graduating women—all of whom are in the market for a killer grad-day look—to Barneys New York Madison Avenue and gave them free rein of all eight designer-filled floors. Each one chose an outfit that suited her personal style and took a victory lap through the beauty floor—stopping by Bobbi Brown, Chanel, and Chantecaille—before ending in the store’s penthouse where they added the final touches of jewels and heels.

Read on to meet the grads and see what they chose for the big day.

Janelle Lloyd
MBA Candidate, Class of 2016, NYU, Stern School of Business

“As a style blogger [check out Janelle’s blog: Wait, You Need This!] with a professional fashion background, it’s been important for me to showcase my style throughout my business school experience and steer clear of the traditional ‘business casual uniform.’ Graduation Day is certainly no exception. I love this Prabal Gurung dress for so many reasons! The soft fabric and subtle pattern are perfect for a springtime fête. The silhouette is equal parts flouncy and fitted and feels bohemian, yet pulled together—my ideal vibe for any look.”

Shivani Pathak
MBA Candidate, Class of 2016, NYU, Stern School of Business

“Post-MBA, I’m working towards opening a contemporary jewelry line with an East-meets-West aesthetic. I am keen to bring together influences from my Indian heritage—a culture with rich jewelry traditions—and influences from my global upbringing and travels. The idea is for the collection to celebrate the increasingly multi-cultural world we live in and to be affordable luxuries for women to wear and enjoy.”

“The sleek, minimalist black trousers paired with a pretty blouse are glammed up with decorated-denim Manolo Blahnik heels, bold art-deco earrings, and delicate gold rings. All the details in the outfit are reflective of my multi-dimensional personality and interests, and made it feel very me.”

“Even in may area of study, the conservative field of law, you can have a unique style. I chose this dress because it was both elegant and fun. Paired with these daytime-appropriate—and very comfortable—wedge shoes, this vibrant cocktail dress is appropriate to wear for graduation and works for a celebratory dinner afterwards.”
