Magnolias are one of the oldest flowering plants on earth, with the first identifiable species dating back to a whopping 95 million years ago. Leave it to groundbreaking scent creator Frédéric Malle to put an abstract and modern spin on this most ancient of aromas. Introducing Eau to Magnolia, the latest addition to Malle’s Editions de Parfums, which brought us olfactory sensations such as Carnal Flower and Portrait of a Lady. Like all of Malle’s fragrances, Eau de Magnolia was a collaborative effort: The intriguing new scent was developed by Malle and master perfumer Carlos Benaïm.

The magnolia’s fragrance profile is actually closer to the citrus burst of an Eau de Cologne than a typical floral. Combined with bergamot and grapefruit and rooted in earthy patchouli, cedar and vetiver, the green notes of the bloom take center stage in a refreshing chypre perfume, perfect for the easy, breezy days of summer.

We could go on and on—but nothing quite compares to experiencing the invigorating perfume for yourself. Tomorrow evening at Barneys’ Madison Avenue flagship, Malle himself will be making an appearance to celebrate the fragrance’s release—and you’re invited. Get ready to meet a modern master, along with your new favorite warm-weather scent.
