When it comes to menswear on screen, it just so happens that it’s a woman who leads the pack. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick began making her mark in the film industry more than three decades ago with an eye for sharp sartorial details that’s come to define not only the projects she’s worked on, but also the eras they’ve come to represent—think Fatal Attraction, Wall Street, Basic Instinct, and Speed. And lest those films make you think she does only amazing suits, know that her more recent projects also include the new Stephen Soderburgh series The Knick, set in a turn-of-the-century downtown New York hospital, the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra, which won her an Emmy, and the much-anticipated Brangelina flick, By The Sea.
Mirojnick has made a career of creating iconic looks for some of Hollywood’s biggest leading men, but what does that mean when it comes to her behind-the-scenes style? We recently asked the seasoned costumer to define her own personal style, and the results are below: a chic mix of masculine and feminine elements, all polished with a worldliness honed through years of travel and experience. Read on for Ellen’s own words about how she likes to dress, then take that inspiration over to barneys.com to create a look of your own that’s sure to be camera-ready.
RAG & BONE
LAMBSKIN DRE SKINNY JEANS
“My go-to bottom, no matter where or when, is black skinny jeans. With these, the leather is sexy and rebellious. A little feminine and a little masculine makes for a great mix.”
TOPAS TITANIUM 29″ MULTIWHEEL SUITCASE
“My career as a costume designer has taken me to all corners of the world. This sleek, modern suitcase holds all my essentials. When I first started designing films and traveling to international locations, I would always over pack—too much color, too many different tops and bottoms—and I still couldn’t find the right outfit to wear! My style has evolved to the stealth simplicity of sleek, black and white timeless classics with pops of color.”
“An everyday Ellen look: leopard-print flats, black jeans, a white shirt, and a trench!”
BUTTERFLY-STUDDED LARGE TOTE
“I learned to draw butterflies when I was a little girl, and this chic bit of butterfly bling reminds me of my early drawings. It’s the perfect size for everything I need for a day at my office or on set.”
DIAMOND, PLATINUM, AND GOLD “SHAKE” PENDANT Y-CHAIN
“I’ve drooled over this piece of jewelry for years. I never tire of it. It is perfect…and diamonds are this girl’s best friend.”
DRIES VAN NOTEN
“My wardrobe never feels complete without packing at least one go-anywhere scarf. I love the textural detail against the backdrop of black.”
