Our style series Barneys Shoe Stories allows us to step into the shoes of dynamic women whose lives are inspiring us with every step they take. Dana Boulos is not only an incredibly talented filmmaker, but she also has an unabashedly bold sense of style that we love. We hung out with her in the Glendale neighborhood of L.A. where she lives, as she showcased Christian Louboutin‘s playful summer collection. Here, she tells us about her style and career in her own words.
I’m a film director and DJ living in Los Angeles. I’ve directed short films, music videos, and fashion projects for a variety of clients. I’ve been channeling my creativity ever since I could remember. I’ve always been fascinated by moviemaking, and as a child I felt really inspired by the characters’ fashion in movies. In high school I was definitely obsessed with the ‘80s and was known for always dressing head to toe in crazy looks. We had a school uniform, but I found ways to slightly twist them.
Fashion has been a part of my life. I love colors and patterns. I don’t follow or look for trends. I like what I like and don’t care if it’s “trendy” or not. I love mixing prints and going for more wild looks. I’ve always thought that the more of a character you dress, the better, which is why my style is colorful, confident, and fitted. While I’m more low-key day to day, when I dress up or DJ I usually go all out. I’ll dress either in colorful sequin rock-and-roll-type of jackets with a colorful patent leather skirt or throw on a printed top with a cheetah skirt. I love layering crazy punk belts all together.
When it comes to shoes I look for attitude. Shoes are the first thing someone notices about someone’s outfit—at least I do! I look for color, texture, height, and shape. That’s why I’m drawn to this Christian Louboutin collection! Shoes are definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.
I really love the textural element of these tweed, hot pink Christian Louboutin pumps—it’s like a twist on a classic. I think they’re surprisingly versatile, and I would dress these down for a meeting or dress them up for an event.
Another fave are these beaded sandals because they’re so colorful and daring. I would definitely wear them for a DJ set. They scream Studio 54 and make me wish I was alive in the ’70s!
As you can tell, I really love the ’70s and ’80s and find a lot of inspiration from those decades. I just wrapped directing my short film Iconic, starring Karina Fontes. It takes place in 1984 and explores the dark side of being a female going into a male-dominated industry and world, summoning her inner strength to defy misconceptions and societal norms. Iconic should be finished end of this month and ready for festival submission in May. I’m also currently working on securing funding for my first feature film, Metal Heart. I believe when you have a dream just go for it, and don’t let anyone or anything stop you until you have accomplished it.
