Starting today, the most anticipated Spring collection, Riccardo Tisci’s debut for Burberry, is available online at Barneys. “I’ve been excited about this ever since the show last fall,” says Jay Bell, Executive Vice President at Barneys. “I could see instantly it was a genius marriage of Tisci’s extraordinary talent and the incredible heritage of Burberry. From sophisticated to street to evening, he did it all. Our customers are going to love it.” The collection is available exclusively at Barneys Madison Avenue and Beverly Hills locations and will be online starting February 27.
In celebration of Tisci’s debut with the London house, Barneys has created a dynamic in-store installation inspired by the geometric designs of architect Carlo Scarpa and elements of a Shakespearean thrust stage. Located on the sixth floor of the Madison Avenue flagship, the dramatically constructed space is the result of six months of planning. “We started exploring ideas back in the fall after the show,” says Matthew Mazzucca, Barneys’ Creative Director/SVP. “We wanted this display to reflect a modern, minimalist, and monolithic feel while also being driven by key parts of Burberry’s new DNA.” Playing with ideas of proportion and scale, the installation incorporates the brand’s signature palette of red and beige, with accents of pale greens.
Along with the installation, Burberry will fill Barneys’ Madison Avenue storefront windows for the month of February. “We wanted to emphasize the label’s rebranding,” says Mazzucca of the notable shift from serif to sans serif font. Tying it back to the sixth-floor display, the windows feature a Scarpa-inspired primitive architectural design.
The windows highlight several key pieces from Burberry’s epic Spring 2019 runway show. Titled Kingdom, the collection features nearly 140 looks, weaving together three distinct story lines of refined, relaxed, and evening dressing. Despite the unmistakable high-fashion appeal, Tisci’s message for this season is one of inclusivity, conjuring up something fabulous for everyone—young or old, male or female, theatrical or reserved.
Editing down a collection so large takes its own special kind of genius, something Barneys’ Bell excels at. “We have our own codes that I look for in our buy, things that define a Barneys point of view,” he says. “First and foremost, the pieces have to be forward-thinking—they need to point toward the next big thing, and that’s exactly what you will see in this collection. Our customers are going to be so excited to see the ease and grace they associate with the brand with the sophistication they expect from a Barneys buy.”
They also expect tradition in the form of the label’s signature trench coat, lined with Burberry check. Sturdy and unassuming, today’s wardrobe staple began its life as a military-issued piece for British soldiers in the trenches during World War I. Tisci brings back the iconic style this season, reconsidering it in new ways. “My favorite piece from the collection has to be the deconstructed trench with silk scarf inserts,” says Bell. “Riccardo is great at subverting codes of any house. With Burberry, he has a whole new challenge, and I can’t wait to watch it unfold.”
