The fantastical world of BAZ DAZZLED, conceptualized under the creative direction of Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin—along with Barneys’ own Dennis Freedman and Charlotte Blechman—could only be clothed by someone as wildly imaginative as Zaldy, the designer extraordinaire who, in tandem with Oscar-winning costumer Martin, created the theatrical ensembles for this season’s must-see holiday windows.
You might remember Zaldy from last year’s Madison Avenue display, which included a pearl ornament encrusted Mrs. Claus jacket that—confession—we fantasized about wearing to our own office holiday party. Beyond his own line, the designer has costumed the likes of Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and the risk-taking troupe of Cirque du Soleil. One glance at Zaldy’s daring portrait (at left) is all it takes to understand why the designer’s creative abandon perfectly aligns with the BAZ DAZZLED collection’s motto, “A Life Lived in Fear is a Life Half Lived.”
Scroll on to see Zaldy and Martin’s process come to life in the exclusive sketches leading up to the finished costumes. And be sure to stop by Barneys this weekend—and throughout the entire holiday season—to see Solar Queen, Luna Queen, Elphresh, Elfemeral, and Celestina in action.
