Wicked Good: The Sweet Style of Revenge’s Ashley Madekwe

If you can look past her rather unscrupulous behavior, you’ve probably picked up the serious style credentials of Revenge‘s Ashley Davenport. (Certainly you remember that Alaia dress she wore to the Memorial Day auction with Daniel.) What you may not know is that the real Ashley—that would be Ashley Madekwe—has a fashion following beyond the small screen. The London native began her blog, Ring My Bell, when she moved to the States in 2009. In sharing her street-chic looks, she’s amassed a loyal following (Barneys including) on both sides of the pond. In fact, one her style admirers is Jill Ohanneson, the costume director for Revenge. Ashley and Jill often work together to assemble looks for her character.

We spoke with Ms. Madekwe and are happy to share her style story below.

What inspired you to start Ring My Bell?
I loved reading other personal style blogs and was so inspired by what the other girls were doing that I just wanted to join in. For me, it’s a creative outlet, and I enjoy the challenge of styling new looks and keeping it fresh for my readers.

How would you describe your personal style?
I think my personal style in very uncommitted. I’m a bit of a fashion magpie, so I love trying out something new, but I am drawn to animal prints, leather and embellishments over and over again.

Who are your style muses?
Miroslava Duma and Alexa Chung. Both have a playful but yet chic approach to dressing.

What are your fashion rules to live by?
Try everything on and tailor items to fit you perfectly. The simplest alteration like nipping in the waist of a jacket can make all the difference.

What trends are you looking forward to testing out this spring?
I’m looking forward to working some yellow into my closet—such a great vibrant colour for spring.

As an actress on Revenge, you probably have more than a few red carpet events. Who are your favorite formal wear designers?
I’ve worn some gorgeous dresses from Lanvin.

If you were “accidentally” locked in Barneys overnight, what would we find you wearing in the morning?
I’d “accidentally” pretend this striped Proenza tee, Rag & Bone skinny jeans, Manolo pumps and PS11 bag were all mine and “accidentally” try to leave with it all. Especially the Proenza bag… ; )
