“I learned how to juggle my sophomore year of high school in geometry class,” Olivia Jansing tells us as we approach the Knowlwood Tennis Club in Santa Barbara, the location for our day’s next shot. “I was constantly finishing my work before everyone and kept asking my teacher if I could leave early to go surfing. The teacher finally told me, ‘Any time you complete a quiz early, try juggling. And when you learn how, you can leave.’ So, I learned!”
As she demonstrates juggling three tennis balls for our amused crew, we’re struck by how incredibly telling of the young model the anecdote is. We’re halfway through our shoot, and Olivia has already seized the day with the boundless energy of an athlete, gracefully slipping into the classic-yet-feminine 1970s-inspired Tory Sport collection, eager to play out the next leg of our marathon shoot. The playful combination of her positive, good-natured energy and curiosity, mixed with a hint of a competitive edge, keeps our newly formed team engaged and on our toes.
Track & Field
Right from the start of our shoot, we find out that Olivia’s aptitude for sport rivals her love of surf. Doing cartwheels in Tory Sport‘s Splash leggings between takes, she displays flashes of pure joy on the field as soon as her toes hit the turf.“Being an athlete is something I take pride in. It’s instilled in me the importance of teamwork, and has taught me how to lead a healthy lifestyle.” The Climb
“With everything in life, what you put in is what you get out,” says Olivia. “From eating healthy, simply doing the right things, and staying positive—it all comes back around.” And it shows: the model exhibits seemingly limitless endurance for the ascent up the bleachers.
As we head downtown, Olivia pokes her head into vintage shops and galleries, taking in the scene at the historic Lawn Bowls Club, filled with locals dressed in crisp all-whites. “What I love most about modeling is the places and people it introduces me to,” she says with enthusiasm. “I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to some amazing destinations over the past year, and being shown around by locals is the way to do it.”
Tee Up, Chill Out
Rounding the corner of Anacapa Street, photographer Will Adler—our unofficial guide—leads us to a cascade of palms and flowers dripping down the side of the Lobero building. The wild backdrop is spectacular, but we can’t resist the neater patch of green in a nearby round—a perfect test for the water-repellent capability of the Tory Sport graphic golf pants.
Game, Set, Match
In addition to her tennis ball juggling skills, Olivia has a solid serve. She hits one ball after the next over the net with a certain swagger that’s less grandstand and more comfortable confidence. “I find it very hard to define strength, because I think it comes and shows differently for everybody. When I think of someone who is strong, I think of someone who is true to themselves and proud of who they are,” she says. “I also think someone who is confident, and strong is always trying to be the best they can be.”
Sensing that the beach shots are not too far away, we head to the pool for a little warm up, including backflips off the diving board (see Olivia’s Instagram account for the visual here). The self-proclaimed water baby is truly in her element.
In the water, Olivia glides from one end of the pool to the other—all arms, legs, and elegance, punctuated by the racing stripe design on the scoopback swimsuit.
We take a moment to dry off at the Santa Barbara Polo Club between the swim and our next and final stop—a chilly soak in the Pacific. With the Santa Ynez Mountains in the distance, we drive along the expansive fields looking for off-duty horses, listening to Olivia’s iPhone playlist including the bands 1975, Oh Wonder, and Kehlani. “I’m bad at playlists,” she asserts, “I never really know what I want to hear until I hear it.”
Finally, we arrive at the much-anticipated Loon Point Beach. It’s a bit of a hike to get there, hidden from the highway and far away from busy tourist-filled city beaches. It’s exactly the type of spot Olivia likes to discover when traveling. Down at the shoreline, we’re met by friendly neighborhood beach dogs and the model/surf enthusiast is coaxed into the ocean despite its chilly temperature. Olivia doesn’t seem to mind—she’s genuinely happy to jump in and test the waters. “What most attracted me to surfing is that it was unlike anything I had seen before, so naturally I wanted to do it.”
