Summer Lovin’ | A Wedding Guest’s Style Guide

The save the dates have been decorating the fridge for months, and now wedding season is finally and most resolutely here. But what to wear, what to wear…

To get the wheels turning, we offer a bit of style inspiration from four of our favorite wedding destinations—Cape Cod, New York, Nashville and Santa Barbara—as well as some discretionary dos and don’ts. But our best advice? Have fun with it. This is a party after all—you’re encouraged to dress the part.

1. Barbara Tfank metallic tweed dress 2. Bottega Veneta ruffle front dress 3. Erdem Iris dress 4. Fendi lurex gown 5. Sandra Dini shell cuff 6. Sunglasses by The Row 7. Deborah Barnet ostrich clutch 8. Cathy Waterman diamond earrings. 9. Manolo Blahnik Andalmod sandals

Do: Outdoor weddings can be particularly windy, so consider bringing a shawl and sporting a hairstyle that can withstand the elements.

Don’t: Easy does it with the stilettos. Their leg-elongating benefits are lost when you’re sinking into sand or a grassy lawn.

1. Nina Ricci deep back dress 2. Prabal Gurung v-neck dress 3. L’Agence halter gown 4. Lanvin sheer sleeve dress 5. Pierre Hardy printed clutch 6. Maiyet gold ring 7. Marni color-block clutch  8. Larkspur & Hawk white topaz Olivia button riviere  9. Nak Armstrong earrings

Do: A black tie wedding is a chance to really get your glam on. If you choose to wear a short dress, stick to classic colors and make sure the fabric is luxe (e.g. satin, silk, lace).

Don’t: Avoid over-the-top jewelry if your dress is bringing the drama. Conversely, if you are sporting a more conservative silhouette, modernize your look with some choice earrings or a bold cuff. The goal here is balance.

1. Parker splotch print wrap dress 2. 3.1 Philip Lim sleeveless dress 3. Diane von Furstenberg Danil dress 4. Dolce & Gabbana tapestry print tie dress 5. 6. Givenchy oversized sunglasses 7. Jennifer Meyer pendant necklace 8. Chloé Lucy bag

Do: Ditch the sundress and the flip-flops. With a beach wedding there’s a temptation to slide down to the dangerously casual end of the wedding attire spectrum, but we assure you that with a short frock and some strappy heels, you can stay looking classy.

Don’t: Lest you’ve forgotten, California is the Sunshine State. Don’t forget those sunglasses!

 1. A.L.C. v-neck dress  2. Nina Ricci sheer sleeve dress 3. C&T Costello Tagliapietra one shoulder dress 4. VPL Corinthian dress 5. Proenza Schouler PS1 pochette  6. Munnu diamond chain link bracelet  8. Monique Péan striped horn ring

Do: If you’ve ever been to a wedding, you know they involve a lot of food and a lot of dancing, and can carry on into the wee hours. Dress for comfort!

Don’t: A special occasion demands a special handbag. Don’t miss the opportunity to break out a statement clutch.
