The name Vans has become synonymous with West Coast cool and skateboard culture, and nothing is more true of that than their classic slip-on sneakers. All it took was Sean Penn donning a pair of checkerboard Vans in the 1982 film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, for the brand’s popularity to take off, becoming the go-to for effortless California style. The Barneys team has elevated that iconic silhouette for the latest installment of BNY Sole Series.
“This season, the color ways in this collaboration are ‘camouflage’ inspired. In the past, we’ve used one material cut and alternated to create the basket-weave look, but this season we used three different types: spazzolato leather, suede, and grain leather,” explains Senior Buyer Chris Pepe.
“The slip-on silhouette is so iconic, and now almost every brand has their own variation,” Pepe continues, “The whole vibe of this Vans style is relaxed, laid-back, easy-going, and very California,” Taking high-quality woven materials, the team created the modern update to the checkerboard in both navy and green. This limited-edition design captures the popular style with a new luxe spin and is available now both in stores and online.
