The Diadora Trident 90 sneaker gets a Barneys New York design spin this month. The Italian style is updated with a laser-cut pattern, which was inspired by geometric NYC manhole coverings. This sleek, etched style was crafted from vegetable-tanned leather, used throughout (even on the laces), and will naturally age with each wear. We spoke with our Senior Men’s Footwear Buyer and creator of BNY Sole Series, Chris Pepe, to learn more about these unique sneakers.
The Window: The sneaker’s design was inspired by patterns found on the street—how did you choose this for the partnership with Diadora?
Chris Pepe: Diadora is an Italian footwear brand, so we wanted to find a way to ‘marry‘ New York City elements into the sneaker in a less obvious way. The manhole cover designs came to mind, and the result is our unique laser-cut pattern. The production process for this style was also familiar, because our own Barneys New York footwear is made in Italy too. It was nice to use Italian leathers and components for this twist on the Trident 90.
What type of leather is used for the laces and exterior?
The shoes’ upper is crafted from Vachetta leather, which is not commonly found on footwear, and we used the same material for the laces.
What makes these sneakers a great buy for fall?
The sneakers get better with age, meaning the leather will change and patina the more you wear them. Plus, natural leather sneakers are on-trend this season.
