As part of 2017 BNY Sole Series, we’ve partnered with adidas to release two exclusive Samba sneakers. Available in either black or white, the pairs are constructed from one piece of smooth leather with a sturdy rubber sole. The result is a sleek design that features debossed detailing on the leather, forming the brand’s signature three stripes. We spoke with Senior Men’s Footwear buyer Chris Pepe to learn more about the team’s creative process.
The Window: What inspired the new Samba design?
Chris Pepe: This was by far our most technical design to date for the entire BNY Sole Series project. While it may look simple, we spent a lot of time perfecting the final version. The whole shoe is constructed of only one piece of soft leather throughout. In comparison, the original adidas Samba is a suede material with leather overlay for the stripes, so for our collaboration, all the details are debossed instead. The concept is uniquely ours, and the monochromatic look really brings design to the forefront.
What do you love most about collaborating with adidas?
adidas is a brand I grew up wearing, and I’ll always remember my first Samba pair—blue nubuck with white stripes. Having the opportunity to put a spin on one of the classics I love is amazing!
How would you style these sneakers into your wardrobe now?
We always aim to release versatile shoes with BNY Sole Series, so you could really dress these up or down. Sticking with traditional black and white color ways on the Samba helps them match everything. I’m really excited to see the customer’s reactions.
