Perhaps Lake Bell caught your eye a couple of years ago when she played Alec Baldwin’s good-looking wife in It’s Complicated, or maybe it more recently on HBO’s How to Make It in America. Or perhaps it was just this month, when she appeared on the cover of New York Magazine’s extra-thick fashion issue, clad in nothing but a sprawling rose tattoo, courtesy of her new hubby Scott Campbell.

Well, we at Barneys can confidently say that Lake has been on our radar for some time. Her comedy and acting talents are impressive but it was her innate sense of style that sealed the deal. C’mon, did you see her wedding dress?

Below, we chat with ever-eloquent Ms. Bell about the origins of said style, her directorial debut with the film In a World (in theaters today!), and her fantasy wardrobe from Barneys New York.

How would you describe your style?
When I was a toddler, I’d often scoff at my mother’s commitment to dressing me head to toe in classic Bonpoint by declaring: “When I grow up, I’m only going to dress FANCY.” Nowadays, I feel I’ve satisfied a number of fancy wardrobe moments and find myself reverting back to mama-knows-best looks whilst keeping a sense of humor. So, my style often teeters between classic and what a 4-year-old would deem fancy.

Who or what inspires your style?
My mother, Robin Bell, of course.

What are you looking forward to wearing this fall?
Scarves. I’m an avid collector of textiles to decorate the décolleté region. As soon as the temperature drops even a degree, that’s my cue to crack open the scarf drawer.

As a native New Yorker, what impact has the city had on the way you dress?
New York inspires you to challenge your chic-o-meter. Women here know how to accessorize when buying chutney at Citronella or hailing a cab on the Bowery. The ever-changing cultural tapestry of this town infects you everyday, whether you like or not. That’s why it’s not only the greatest city in the world, but it’s also the chicest.

If you had to pick an all-time favorite article of clothing, what would it be and why?
My mustard Lyn Devon “Dorris Swing” mohair coat.

Tell us about your new movie, In a World…
It’s a father/daughter competition story set in the cut-throat voice-over industry. It’s a comedy, so it’s okay to laugh.

How do you relate to your character, Carol?
I relate to her neurosis more than her choice in baby-doll dresses. That said, Carol is representative of me at a less certain time in my life. I’m thrilled to report I’ve evolved somewhat from a state of arrested development—or else I wouldn’t have had the inclination to make this film.

What are you working on next?
As I write my next feature to direct, I’m always hunting for acting and voice-over gigs to enrich my writing process. I prefer to surround myself with other creatives and continue to exercise my collaborative muscles. I also have a Disney film coming out next year called Million Dollar Arm with Jon Hamm and Alan Arkin.

Chloé Studded Boots

“These Chloé boots fall under the fancy category. I have always coveted them, and while they do satisfy a trend, they seem to remain timeless. As a rule: I respect all things that get better with age.”

“This Sidney Garber bracelet is the epitome of classic. My mom would be very proud of this select. You can wear it to Brooklyn Bowl or to Lincoln Center.”

“Rag & Bone never fails me. If you’re partial to the fedora, it’s imperative you don the right one. The alternative is dire.”

L’Wren Scott Sheer Yoke Dress

“This is a fantasy frock. L’Wren Scott cuts for a woman’s body. This perfect dress makes curves look elegant. (Major points with mom.)”

“Only Proenza Schouler can make a crew-neck look cool. The sweater is a necessary acquisition for the fall wardrobe, so you better make it warm and versatile.”

Bottega Veneta Passamaneria Clutch

“FANCY. Bottega Veneta elevates the clutch as art. This series of ornate rock’n’roll regal collection of bags are so substantial that they negate the necessity jewelry.”

Proenza Schouler Credit Card Holder

“In the same way I’ll kick and scream to check a bag while travelling, I also insist on a streamlined approach to daily baggage by using a single fold for my main wallet. This Proenza credit card holder is the coolest version of this system.”
