Pretty girls have a way of taking themselves a lit-tle seriously, but we know that’s hardly the case with Rose Byrne. The Aussie beauty has made her way into a number of sidesplitting comedies: Bridesmaids, Get Him to the Greek, and The Internship, to name a few. For the record, we also loved her in the more sober television series Damages and The Place Beyond the Pines.
Next up for Ms. Byrne is Neighbors, the hilarious tale of a turf war between a young couple (Seth Rogen plays the husband) and a fraternity that moves in next door (Zac Efron is the president, natch). While her character Kelly has the sort of comfort-first style befitting of a new mom, the real Rose Byrne is supremely fashionable, with a closet full of frocks by designers like Erdem, Prabal Gurung, and Christopher Kane. She dresses adventurously—especially on the red carpet—which makes her one of our absolute favorites to watch season after season. And did we mention her hair? Perfection.
We caught up with actress, our Influencer for the month, to learn about more about her style on set and off. Check out our Q&A below, as well as Rose’s wardrobe wish list from Barneys.
How would you describe your character in Neighbors?
Kelly is slightly deviant, wild, a little eccentric, fiercely protective, and loyal. She’s the ideal person to have a lost weekend with.
What’s been your worst real-life neighbor situation?
When I lived in the West Village, my neighbor was a highly paranoid stoner. He wrote me long, complex letters about the ways in which I apparently planned to ruin his evenings.
Did shooting the movie bring you back to your own college days?
I went to Sydney University, but by then my party years were mostly behind me. Unfortunately, my finely-tuned nervous system can’t handle many nights past 11 p.m.!
What was your style like back then?
I went to raves as a teenager and I’d wear tiny t-shirts meant for eight-year-olds, high-waisted flared jeans, Nike Air Max shoes, a lollipop in my mouth, and very dark brown lipstick. Hideous. I was the epitome of a ’90s “bomber chick.”
How would you describe your personal style?
Casual and oscillating between very feminine and very boyish shapes.
Of all the characters you’ve played, who’s had the best wardrobe?
By far Jackie Q from Get Him to the Greek. I played Russell Brand’s estranged wife who was a pop singer. My dear friend, costume designer Leesa Evans, dressed me in monokinis, leather, feathers, miniature top hats, slashed Lycra mini-skirts, and a load of fake tan.
Do you have any fashion rules?
No more polyester dresses!
What are your favorite wear-everyday pieces?
Oliver Peoples DaddyB shades in tortoise shell and black.
What are you looking forward to wearing this summer?
My togs! (Australian slang for bathing suit.)
