New York State Of Mind: How The BARNEYS Team Gets Its Culture Fix

It’s the calm before the storm. Just before the Fashion Week hysteria starts, the Barneys team dishes how they’re currently tapping into their cultural sides…

Women’s Fashion Director

“Sadly, I rarely make it to museums in the city, but this winter I couldn’t miss de Kooning at MoMA and Maurizio Cattelan at the Guggenheim. I also love popping into Sperone Westwater on Bowery and Lehmann Maupin on Chrystie Street because they’re both within a block of my house.”

Creative Ambassador at Large

“I get 50 percent from The Daily Mail (lowbrow) and 50 percent from Slate (highbrow, except for my columns).”

Chief Merchant, Executive Vice President

“Think football as cultural fix. It has been an incredibly exciting season, particularly as a Giants fan. (I am still waiting for Michael Carl to get his act together with a new fashion fantasy football league—there are many of us!) Post-football, my wonderful team gave me a family membership to the MoMA, and on February 6th, they have this fantastic family event after the museum closes. This will hopefully start a season of visits—first of which will be Cindy Sherman.”

Chief Executive Officer

“I’m dying to see ‘A Separation,’ and I will find the time now that the men’s fashion shows are over and we have brief pause before women’s starts.”

Creative Director

“I am lucky to live in New York City—it’s an embarrasment of riches. I’m looking forward to the big Cindy Sherman retrospective at MoMA.”

Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications

“I love the theater, but unfortunately I don’t get there as often as I would like. I just saw ‘Venus in Fur‘ last week, which was great. I am going to Anthony Minghella’s Madama Butterfly‘ later on in the month, and I cannot wait for it. I also can’t wait for the Cindy Sherman exhibit at MoMA.”

General Merchandise Manager, Executive Vice President

“Spring signifies the start of the art season, and March holds the best events, like the Armory Show at Piers 92 and 94 and Volta NY. I like contemporary art, but modern art is my thing; the best place to rediscover modern treasures are in museums. If you can’t get there, pick up Phaidon‘s new compendium called ‘The Art Museum.’ This book has 1,000 pages with over 2,700 images of art—all at your fingertips.”
