It’s no secret that we love nail art—who doesn’t? These days, you can’t go anywhere without spotting a striking patterned mani. Enter Taryn Multack, the nail artist and blogger extraordinaire behind Miss Ladyfinger. Known for translating runway patterns into simple, step-by-step manicures (Have you seen her Fendi Spring 2014 ombre? Obsessed.), Taryn has revolutionized the way we think about our nails—no more chips for us!
Today on The Window, we chat with Taryn about her favorite NYC nail salons and her current manicure muse.
What inspired you to start the blog?
A few years ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer (don’t worry—she’s a survivor!) and other parts of my life were starting to crumble—needless to say, it was a tough time. I started the blog as a creative outlet. I attended NYFW through my day job and I was always so inspired by the prints, but as a young working professional, affording high fashion wasn’t always an option. Instead, I decided to own a piece of the runway, so to speak, through nail art.
How many shades of nail polish do you own, really?
Polishes are delivered almost weekly, but as of today, the grand total is 694.
Which New York City nail salons must we try?
The catch about being a nail blogger is that I rarely get my nails done! However, Valley Nails, Jin Soon, Sakura and Tenoverten are all iconic salons for great nail art and nail services.
What is your favorite nail polish shade for an outdoor autumn wedding and for the first day of fall?
For an outdoor autumn wedding, a dark umber with a matte top coat is strikingly beautiful and rich. And for the first day of fall, I love a rustic orange. It is the perfect transition color into the autumnal tones.
Who is your current manicure muse?
Prabal Gurung is a longtime inspiration of mine. He creates clothes that make women feel empowered. I have been closely following his journey ever since I heard him speak at a Times Talk in 2010. Since then, he’s dressed some of the most powerful women in media and collaborated with renowned retailers. Apart from that, he has impeccable attention to structure and his prints are exquisite. My favorite collection will forever be Spring 2012, however, each season continues to amaze me.
What is the most coveted item in your closet?
My 3.1 Phillip Lim crocodile-stamped Pashli satchel that I got at Barneys. It was the first big ticket item I bought for myself as a new entrepreneur. I couldn’t decide between a classic black or the croc. Everyone at the store helped me make my decision and applauded when I left. To this day, I get stopped on the street. No one has seen anything quite like it.
What are your top five tips for a perfectly polished look?
1. Embrace color.
2. Don’t be afraid to mix prints.
3. Invest in classic closet items—like a moto jacket or fitted blazer—at least once a year.
4. Sometimes looking perfectly polished is just as simple as a t-shirt and jeans.
5. Be confident. I don’t believe in the saying ‘I can’t pull that off.’ You absolutely can (if you do it tastefully) and believe it.
What is the best (beauty) advice you have ever received?
Someone once told me a woman’s nails speak a lot about the kind of woman she is, so treat them kindly. We use our hands for everything and the attention we give them reflects how much time we put into nurturing ourselves.
If you were accidentally locked in Barneys, what would we find you wearing in the morning?
You would definitely find me wearing…
