Founded in 1829, Delvaux is considered to be the oldest luxury goods label in the world. Official supplier to the royal court of Belgium, this luxury label is known for its quality craftsmanship and breathtakingly beautiful bags. Delvaux’s commitment to tradition, process, and technique can be seen throughout the structure and silhouette of our latest must-have: Le Mutin Saddle Bag.

With a name that translates to “rebel,” “one who is mischievous”, or as Artistic Director Christina Zeller describes it, “a free spirit, somewhere between insolent and irreverent”—Le Mutin is somewhat of a rule breaker. The bag is defined by the way it pairs Delvaux’s quality craftsmanship and extreme attention to detail with modern styling.

It’s a modern reinterpretation of a practical bag with a sporty-chic twist to it,” says Zeller.

The label’s commitment to history starts with Le Mutin’s design. Finding a way to both break the mold and stay seamlessly on brand, this compact saddle bag features a rounded silhouette inspired by the label’s archived Chasseresse and Cobalt bags, from 1962 and 1969 respectively.

Like all Delvaux pieces, Le Mutin is handcrafted in the label’s Belgian or French ateliers using a traditional production process. According to Zeller, this detailed approach and commitment to quality begins with the bag’s use of crispy calf leather, a sophisticated and resistant material conceived by the brand specifically for this bag.

Describing the process of creating a Le Mutin, Zeller says, “The ridge of the calf is placed on the center of the bag which creates a natural pattern. The construction of the bag allows an oversized raw edge, which is perfectly aligned with the design of the strap, creating continuity.” She describes this commitment to craftsmanship as the brand’s strength and ultimately its focus.

The unique closure is taken directly from the archived Cobalt design. When first created back in 1969, the slip-through tab closure marked a move away from the decorative metal closures that were popular at the time.

Another thing to know about Delvaux: it’s a brand that’s as serious about its craft as it is its intentions.

“Delvaux has always been a visionary house,” says Zeller. Not afraid to break the mold, the label has designed bags with webbed shoulder straps for years, starting with the Zanzibar bag in 1950. Le Mutin continues that tradition with its striped twill strap. Thick and durable, this sporty strap adds an unexpectedly informal element to the classic saddle silhouette, allowing it to be worn over the shoulder or across the body.

Combining the best of all worlds, Delvaux’s Le Mutin is a go-everywhere bag that respects the past, looks to the future, and offers versatile styling options. Indeed worthy of Must. Have. Bag. status.
