To try to define Lulu Chang and her blog, Lulu & Your Mom, would ruin all the fun. From relating quirky anecdotes to chronicling haute couture runway shows and everything in between, Lulu comes across as the charming girl next door, with a fashion-forward sensability that calls for a double take.
Below, the blogging sensation sat down with us to tell her style story. Trust us on this one—you’ll want to know the five rules this fashionista swears by.
Barneys New York: What is the history behind your blog?
Lulu Chang: The blog encompasses what I’m about. I think people want to make fashion more relevant to them. And the easiest way to do that is to associate it with a sense of personal taste.
BNY: Who is your fashion icon?
LC: Phoebe Philo. Everything she does is very precise and detailed. At the same time, she knows exactly how a woman wants to dress. That’s how I see myself in Céline.
BNY: What is the most valuable fashion advice you have ever received?
LC: Theophilus London said in a recent issue of Interview, “Dress down. You gotta learn your body, how clothes fit on you. Dressing up, for me, is looking like an idiot.”
The 5 Fashion Rules Lulu Lives By
1. If it works, wear it again.
2. Some things look better worn-in.
3. Always upgrade the things you love.
4. Wear what you are comfortable in.
5. Quality over quantity.
BNY: What city is your fashion capital?
LC: If I had to pick, I’d say New York. The shopping is the best. Right, Barneys?
BNY: What is the most coveted item in your closet?
LC: I have this great Junya Watanabe men’s moto jacket in a gray sweatshirt material. I love classic jackets with an unconventional twist. Plus, it’s one of the only jackets I own that actually keeps me warm.
BNY: If you could shop inside anyone’s closet, who’s would it be?
LC: Kate Moss! Even looking at old pictures of her and Johnny Depp from the nineties makes me want her perfect camel coat and little slip dresses.
LC: JUNYA WATANABE Comme des Garçons motorcycle jacket, Maison Martin Margiela tee, Theyskens’ theory pants, Alexander Wang heels, Nixon men’s chronograph watch, Ann Dexter-Jones ID bracelet and Byredo M/Mink perfume.
