When we heard Loeffler Randall’s latest collection of shoes was inspired by organic textures and warm destinations, our minds immediately wandered to Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Moab, and Sedona. Perhaps we’re in need of a vacation, but as it turns out, we weren’t too far off. Creative Director Jessie Randall tells us, “I sneak away with my family each December right as I am concepting Resort, and it’s so inspiring for me. For Resort ’16, I was thinking about desert textures and easy, yet covetable silhouettes.” A respite in the way of eye-pleasing shoes? We’ll take it.
To up the ante on the Loeffler Randall nod to the desert environment in the way of textured leather tassels, leisurely silhouettes like lace-up sandals, slides, and espadrilles, we took cues from Insta-escape, @plantsonpink and grabbed armfuls of arid potted greenery from New York City’s high-on-design plant hub, The Sill. Once on set, the holiday-ready shoes and flats looked right at home.
Below, we turn to Jessie Randall to see what she thinks about Instagram’s most snapped accessory, the details that make a Loeffler Randall shoe special, and where we may expect her next inspiration to be drawn from. Howard Stern, Solange Knowles, PTA meetings, Jamaica? These shoes are ready for anything.
The Window: Are there certain details in your collection that have become Loeffler Randall hallmarks?
Jessie Randall: People tell me that they can always tell when a shoe is ours. We have a clean, modern sensibility with a feminine edge. Our neutral palette and beautiful raw materials are a signature element. I like everything I design to be something you can wear for seasons—and many years—to come. They are shoes that work equally well at an event or the office or a weekend trip to the farmer’s market.
Heels or flats: which do you gravitate towards?
I’ve got a very busy life and run around a lot so I gravitate towards flats for sure. Everything we design at LR is wearable and walkable—even the shoes with higher heels.
Do you wear test your shoes?
Yes! Comfort is super important to me. Our girl has a lot going on and wants to look chic while still living a multi-faceted life—from running after her kids, out with friends, or heading to work. It’s something we are always thinking about.
Is there a current runaway hit from the collection?
All the women in my office are wearing the Callie right now. We can’t keep them in stock. They are that great mix of masculine cool and feminine detail.
Those fringed heels look like a good time…
I love these shoes! Some of my favorites we’ve ever made. I have them in nude and in black. I just packed them for my upcoming trip to Jamaica. I’ll be wearing them with culottes or dresses. They are chic and elegant, yet still make a big statement.
If you were in the desert and saw an oasis, what would that oasis be?
Howard Stern holding a tray of guacamole.
We love the ‘Scarlet’ lace-ups. If you were out wearing them, what song would you request inspired by those shoes?
“Losing You” by Solange.
As you know, we were inspired by the sunny @plantsonpink Instagram handle for this story, who are some of your favorites to follow?
Lately I’m loving: @warm_ny, @deehaim, @helendealtry, @hartlandbrooklyn, @aimeemillerotoole, @landonmetz, and finally, @mcfetridge. [Editor’s note: Be sure to check out and follow @loefflerrandall, too!]
Have you ever taken a shoefie?
I take them all the time. It’s funny—whenever I am out in SoHo near my office I always miss people I know because my head is down, looking at shoes. I am obsessed! So most of my shots are of shoes. I’m planning to take a lot of them in Jamaica. Can’t wait!
