“Lipstick to me is an ongoing story about the experience of being female. Nothing is as glamorous or as empowering.” So says Poppy King, founder of popular cosmetics brand Lipstick Queen. And honestly, she would know. An industry veteran for more than 20 years, King is known for producing unusual shades that highlight and accentuate the lips. Her latest launch, which is debuting exclusively at Barneys New York, is no exception. Moved by a love of surrealism and altered universes, the Australian makeup maven looked to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for inspiration, playing on the idea of “going down a rabbit hole where nothing is what it seems.” In this case Lewis Carroll’s mind-bending fairy tale was reimagined as a sheer black lipstick with shimmering gold flecks. The resulting hue, dubbed Black Lace Rabbit, is seemingly intense and yet universally flattering. Designed to create a seductive, smoky lip, the versatile hue can be worn alone as a delicate veil of color or over another lipstick to deepen the original shade and create an eye-catching ombré effect. The conditioning formula also includes nourishing shea and mango seed butter, Vitamin E, and black soybean extract, which increases moisture levels resulting in firm, plump lips. One thing’s for sure, this shade-shifting lipstick is transformative in more ways than one.
