The fashion and art community is mourning the loss of one of its own, the journalist Anna Piaggi, who passed away at the age of 81 today. Simon Doonan writes to The Window with a tribute.
* * *
Anna Piaggi, editor and muse, was the greatest fashion eccentric of our time.
With her bejeweled canes, painted fans, spangly tights and flourescent muffs, she paved the way for gals like Isabella Blow and Daphne Guinness. It’s hard to look at Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj without thinking of the colorful, dada madness of La Piaggi. Her idiosyncratic style, celebrated by everyone from Antonio Lopez to Bill Cunningham to Karl Lagerfeld, played a vital role in the story of 20th Century style. Without the unbridled imagination and creative fantasy of Miss Piaggi then clothes are just clothes. Anna Piaggi gave us all a sense of possibility and fabulosity.
