How Three of Our Favorite Designers Do Mother’s Day

As if being a major force in the fashion world wasn’t enough, these three design dynamos are also devoted moms. Here, they share their favorite Mother’s Day traditions along with gift picks worthy of the most stylish wish lists.

Barneys New York: Describe your perfect Mother’s Day.
Jennifer Meyer Maguire: Well, if I can sleep in that will make me very happy. This Mother’s Day will be extra special because we get to spend it with my sister, who is a new mom. Ruby and Otis adore their new cousin. We will most likely do a bike ride at the beach. Just a fun relaxed day with my kids—nothing sounds better.

BNY: What’s the best fashion advice your own mother gave you?
JMM: Don’t be afraid to layer your jewelry. But other than that, my mom was amazing at letting me and my sister really find our way and experiment with fashion. I try to do the same with my daughter, who comes up with the most amazingly imaginative outfit combinations.

BNY: If we could take a snapshot of you having a blast with your kids, what would we find you doing?
JMM: We were just in New York and the kids loved it—visits to Eloise at the Plaza, playing in Central Park and a horse and buggy ride.

BNY: What are five things on your personal Mother’s Day wish list?
JMM: Anything Proenza Schouler! I just love their classic yet bold bags. I am really loving the PS1 Medium Leather Tote in bright red (1). Étoile Isabel Marant can’t go wrong. I love these little booties (2)—perfect for day or even night. Diptyque candles (7)—if I could, I would have one going in every room. I love all things Current/Elliot. This jacket (4) is perfect for a casual dress or for something a bit fancier at night. Girl by Band of Outsiders always has great pieces. I’m certain I would live in these pants (5)!

BNY: Which item from your collection makes the best Mother’s Day gift?
JMM: In addition to my wedding band, I rarely take off my two letter necklaces (6)—one for each of my babies. They look effortlessly chic and they always remind me of my children. I also love wearing my large diamond heart (3). It’s got a little bit of bling and a lot of love.

BNY: How will we find you spending Mother’s Day with your family?
Jessie Randall: We usually do something low key. This year we might go for a delicious brunch and then take the boys on Jane’s Carousel in Dumbo. Then we’ll take some photo booth pics at Bubby’s restaurant.

BNY: What’s the best fashion advice your own mother gave you?
JR: Forbidding me to wear velour (the entire fabric) in high school. Looking back, it was very sound advice.

BNY: If we could take a snapshot of you having a blast with your kids, what would we find you doing?
JR: I’d be in my kitchen either working on an art project with them or watching them dance around like maniacs to “Firework.”

BNY: What are five things on your personal Mother’s Day wish list?
JR: Acne Zip Front Leather Jacket (1); Isabel Marant Embellished Tie-Dye Jacket (2); Carven Contrast Collar Shirt (4); some cute nail polish colors (5); Marni Wide Temple Sunglasses (6).

BNY: Which item from your collection makes the best Mother’s Day gift?
JR: The Loeffler Randall Fawn Sandal (3)—my favorite sandal of the season. Love that pop of neon. These sandals add a punch to any outfit. They are super comfortable, too; I could push a stroller all day in them.

BNY: Describe your perfect Mother’s Day.
Ann Dexter-Jones: Having a lazy brunch in bed with whomever of my children happens to be in town, as they are always busy traveling with their work. During dinner later, I get teary over the beautiful and sentimental cards they write.

I receive thoughtful personal gifts: My children Mark Ronson, Samantha Ronson and Alexander Dexter-Jones download personalized playlists of their own musical compositions for me. It’s a big help—I am a bit technically inept. Charlotte Ronson and Annabelle Dexter-Jones, two of my daughters, personalize from their own fashion lines, Charlotte Ronson Design and Annabelle for Faith Connexion

BNY: What’s the best fashion advice your own mother gave you?
ADJ: I was only 10 years old when my mother died very suddenly, but I recall that she told me:
1) Never pluck your eyebrows. With regret, I did!
2) Never pierce your ears—that, I don’t regret.
3) Never wear ankle bracelets. Only loose women wore them in her time—I heeded that advice.
She had a passion for limited-edition shoes and handbags—I have a passion for everything!

BNY: If we could take a snapshot of you having a blast with your kids, what would we find you doing?
ADJ: At a rock-and-roll concert, backstage. Hanging and having fun. Or, kicking back at home, watching old and new comedies on TV and laughing until we cry.

BNY: What are five things on your personal Mother’s Day wish list?
ADJ: 1. Stella McCartney Perforated Slip-Ons. 2. Rick Owens Asymmetric Button Jacket; 3. MiH jeans London-Skip; 4. The Row Minna Top; 5. Timo Weiland – Lilly Pad Print Cardigan Sweater.

BNY: Which item from your collection makes the best Mother’s Day gift?
ADJ: The Ann Dexter-Jones Gold Medium RP ID Bracelet (6). The underside of the plate can be engraved with the children’s names or a special personal message for mom.
