Red, White And Barneys: How Five Tastemakers Do The Fourth of July

As the Fourth of July approaches, you might be anticipating backyard barbecues, rooftop soirées or digging your toes in the sand, but whatever your itinerary entails, make sure you are celebrating in style. Below, take a cue from some of the coolest tastemakers we know.

1. The Row round frame; 2. Jerome Dreyfuss python small Momo saddle bag; 3. Kiehl’s Since 1851 vital sun protection SPF 30 sunscreen; 4. J Brand 1214 Aiden; 5. “A big barbecue in the backyard is always my favorite 4th of July tradition. And of course fireworks, but I’d much prefer to set them off myself. This holiday, I’m actually leaving the country and going to Africa with my husband. This will be my first 4th of July not spent in America. As for what I’ll be wearing—a little as possible! (These sunglasses, shortssandals and I always wear my lucky arrowhead ring when I travel). I’ll pack an awesome pair of jeans, a Mara Hoffman bikini (top and bottom) and lots of sunscreen. Also, definitely a bag with lots of compartments that isn’t too large for exploring.”

“For me, July 4th is all about family, friends and food. I love to prepare a summer menu consisting of fresh seasonal produce (corn, mint pesto, heirloom tomatoes, fresh peaches and blackberries) accompanied by barbecued skirt steak. We also love documentaries (my wife’s a filmmaker), so in those rare moments of down time, we try and catch up on the stuff we missed at Sundance or Tribeca.

Our family is spending this July 4th on Shelter Island. We have been going there for a decade—it’s the place where we escape the velocity of New York. Coffee, newspapers and books in the morning—I am determined to finished Esther Duflo’s book on development and poverty alleviation, “Poor Economics.” Then, we’ll hit the beach with the kids before it gets too hot. A picnic lunch, more swimming and then margaritas on Sunset Beach. It’s great to end the evening with a nightcap on the porch at La Maison Blanche. Maiyet’s men’s collection debuts in Fall ’13, so for my trip, I will be packing: a Vince t-shirt, Orlebar Brown anniversary swim trunks and Bottega Veneta sneakers, all for the beach. For dinners in the growing number of great restaurants on Shelter Island: a Maison Martin Margiela jacket and Lanvin chinos with a simple collared shirt. I never leave home without my Alden wingtips. My wife on other hand, gets to wear Maiyet whenever she wants.  She’ll be bringing one of our iconic fish necklaces from Kenya, our burnt orange Gehry shoulder bag and a great cropped jacket with an embroidered collar.”

“My 4th of July tradition is eating a great burger, fresh off the grill, seeing a big summer movie and then finding a great spot, preferably near water to see fireworks! I always love being creative every day, but this 4th of July will be a uniquely artistic one, as we are expecting our first child soon, so I may be painting a room and putting a few new things together. I’ll definitely be living in my white linen studio shirt and then maybe throw on my Destroyed Cary jacket if we make it out!”
