At this point, we should all be well-versed in the history of the cult favorite skincare line, La Mer. (If not, please educate yourself here.) It’s moisturizing, it’s nourishing, it’s restoring—let’s just say it’s wildly popular for good reason. And with an ingredient as, well, miraculous as Miracle Broth™, how could you possibly expect your products to do even more?
Enter Soleil de la Mer™, the new collection from the line that adds SPF protection and sunless tanning properties to your beloved lotions and potions. The Reparative Face Sun Lotion SPF 30 and The Reparative Body Sun Lotion SPF 30 (call 212-826-8900 to order) are engineered for high performance in-sun protection that helps defend skin against UVA and UVB rays, helping prevent future skin damage, while hydrating and repairing the look of skin from past damage. The Face and Body Gradual Tan gives skin an even, natural-looking glow while also providing long-lasting hydration.
SPFs should be a no-brainer (you’re wearing SPF now, right?), but we’re probably not the only ones with horror stories of sunless tanning gone horribly wrong, so we called in the big guns—that would be makeup artist Mary Phillips—to show us the way. Read on, and get glowing!
What’s your #1 tip on how to successfully apply a tanning product?
To successfully apply a tanning product, you want to first have freshly exfoliated, clean skin—you shouldn’t have any oils or lotions pre-application. Once you’re ready to create a sun-kissed glow, hands should apply the product while moving in circular motions to make sure it’s evenly blended. A helpful tip would be to apply sparingly around hands, feet, elbows, and knees, and then to apply regular lotion to those areas and blend. It’s a great idea to apply a bit of baby powder to under arms and forearm creases, or any areas prone to sweat so your tan can dry and set evenly.
What’s the biggest mistake people make in application?
I believe the biggest mistake people make in application is using too much product; that’s when it tends to get streaky and uneven. Another mistake is not exfoliating! Getting rid of the dead/ dry skin pre-application is paramount! Self tanner adheres to dryer areas of the skin, which will result in that blotchy or patchy appearance if the skin hasn’t been polished beforehand. Applying self tanner is a process: shave your legs, exfoliate your skin, and make sure you give yourself enough TIME to apply properly and let it dry.
Who should be using these products, and who shouldn’t be using them?
I think everyone can use these products. People with darker skin tones like the look of their skin when it looks like they have spent a few hours in sun, and even those with lighter skin tones (who are more susceptible to sun damage) can sometimes be more red instead of “tan” post laying out. These products can give people a color that they couldn’t achieve naturally, without the risk of sun damage.
What makes Soleil de la Mer™ so special in this category?
La Mer is such a leader and innovator in skincare, these products are only an extension of that! What makes the Soleil de la Mer™ collection special is that it contains the Miracle Broth of La Mer, so it actually moisturizes your skin instead of drying it out like self tanners can do. In the realm of the face and body SPFs, the products are extremely moisturizing as well as protective; they also have reparative properties, so you’re helping protect yourself from current sun damage, as well as restoring your skin from past damage. To boot, it even has anti aging ingredients – it really covers all of your bases!
What are your other tips to faking a glow?
A great way to fake a glow is to use a foundation, 1 to 2 shades darker than your skin tone, mix that with some Crème de la Mer and apply it to your face for a great tinted moisturizer. Also use the same foundation with the La Mer Body Crème and lightly apply to the body to give some color. Use a powder that has light reflective particles and apply it to legs, arms and chest to set the lotion and foundation.
Any specific products you love?
I LOVE La Mer! The Cleansing Lotion is incredible–it not only removes makeup but leaves skin super soft. After I cleanse the skin, I apply The Radiant Infusion to the face, neck, and décolleté. I then massage The Concentrate into the skin, which gives an immediate change, both in appearance and texture. I pat The Eye Concentrate to the upper, lower, and side skin of eyes, and finish with the magic that is Crème de la Mer. Sometimes I even mix the Creme de la Mer into foundation to improve texture before applying. This process creates a perfect canvas for makeup application, and will leave your skin glowing all night!
I also love Bobbi Brown‘s new Sheer Color Lip Gloss colors in Ultra Violet and Popsicle – they’re incredible. I especially love the Ultra Violet shade! Their blush in Pale Pink is really youthful and flattering, and Rouge for Lips and Cheeks in Calypso Coral would be an ideal addition to any spring palette.
What are your favorite makeup trends for spring?
Spring is such a wonderful time for makeup lovers! Begin to go bold and experiment with color in products that are lighter in texture and formula. My favorite looks are anything fresh and colorful, which is what spring is all about! Soft pinks and neon orange lips, clean black liner, gorgeous FULL lashes, pink, blue and turquoise eye shadows. It’s all about fun! As long as your skin is always fresh and not overdone, you can rock a bright and bold makeup look!
What’s something every woman should do to transition their skincare and beauty regimen from winter to spring?
People tend to have a heavier skincare regimen during winter due to cold climates and dryness, so you’ll want to alter the consistency of your creams and moisturizers. Adding an exfoliator to your skincare arsenal is a must for spring to make sure you’re buffing off the winter skin that’s been hiding under all those cozy layers. Sunscreen is KEY, (that goes for all seasons) but especially during this time as you’ll be showing an influx of flesh as well as embarking in more outdoor activities. Even a few minutes of sun exposure without a good SPF, adds up over the years and causes noticeable and undesirable changes to the skin. A body creme is extremely essential for this season. If the skin is not well moisturized, it becomes more vulnerable to UV damage. You’ll want to create a routine that will give you a head start for summer skin, and one of the integral parts to that routine should be moisture, moisture, moisture!
