We’ve loaded up our Starbucks cards, planned out a week’s worth of outfits and started/abandoned three juice fasts in a row. It can only mean one thing: Fashion Week has officially begun!
Want the behind-the-scenes scoop? You’ve come to the right place. Here’s our very first Fashion Week dispatch from Barneys New York Fashion Director Tomoko Ogura—the first of many to come. At Juan Carlos Obando‘s presentation just a few hours ago, she snagged the designer to ask him a few questions—and even got him to spill the dirt on his narrowly averted fashion-astrophe! Read on, then check out her snapshots below.

Tomoko: Hi, Happy Fashion Week! Can you just tell us a little bit about the mood of the collection?
Juan Carlos: I wanted to create this fantastic fantasy world with a bit of an edge; a tiny bit of Pan’s Labyrinth—with a twist.
Tomoko: And tell us about the papier-mâché heads.
Juan Carlos: The whole idea was to create this animal texture and I thought, what is the best way to create it in a way that is whimsical? And I said, well, let’s just make these papier-mâché animal heads and put them out like soldiers. We’re at the Park Avenue Armory in one of the most beautiful halls—it’s like an entrance to a ball. I wanted a witty way to approach something that could be stiff.
Tomoko: So, what’s your favorite head?
Juan Carlos: The pig.
Tomoko: I think mine’s the frog.
Juan Carlos: All the girls like the frog! I wonder why.
Tomoko: And lastly, is there a secret you can tell us about the collection?
Juan Carlos: A secret? Well… we forgot a dress in the studio in L.A.! We had to think, Oh my gosh, who’s in L.A.? Let’s book a ticket! And she had to come.
Stay tuned for more Fashion Week dispatches to come…
