Esteban Cortazar’s clothes tell the story of the designer’s worldly upbringing—he was born in Colombia, raised in Miami, and has lived in both New York and Paris—with a sophisticated point of view that belies his boyish face. His genius lies in his ability to cut decidedly modern, often minimalist-inspired silhouettes that are quietly romantic, perhaps a reflection of his Latin roots. Cortazar’s command of materials is also something to note. From gauze and charmeuse to neoprene and jersey, thoughtful pairings are evidence of the designer’s dexterity.
Cortazar is bringing a modern sensibility to his business model, too: In his efficient operation, looks that are seen on the catwalks in September can be purchased as early as October. He begins working with buyers long before the pieces are on the runway (and has in the past, even foresaken shows entirely), giving both parties a head-start on producing and fulfilling orders. Ultimately, this process frees Cortazar to focus on designing and shaping plans for the future—which looks to be a bright one.
