Over $35 million dollars in research. A team of 80 development specialists working non-stop for 10 years. More than 1500 individual engineered parts and 100 separate patents. No, these aren’t the numbers for NASA’s latest satellite mission. This is the technology behind every Phantom speaker from Devialet, the French tech company leading the revolution in bringing audio into the 21st century. Last month, Barneys welcomed Devialet into our Madison Avenue flagship with a listening room—unveiling during thedrop@barneys—that allows clients to experience this groundbreaking technology and sound for themselves.
“Innovation and technology are at the core of what we do, but it’s all for the sake of emotion. What we’ve created allows people to experience the true emotional power of music in a way no other product in the history of audio that has been able to,” says Adrien Da Maia, general manager of Devialet in the Americas. “When technology and design work together to create something very simple, the technology disappears and you just have the experience. When you discover Phantom, you will rediscover your favorite song for the first time because it will be like you’re hearing it for the first time.”
Shoppers on Madison Avenue’s first floor are invited to put this claim to the test by stopping into Devialet’s listening room for a demonstration of the brand’s proprietary Analogue Digital Hybrid technology. By fusing the best of traditional analogue technology with the efficiency of digital, Devialet has accomplished a complete revolution in audio never before achieved. As Da Maia tells us, to achieve the quality and power of just two Phantom speakers in a space, you would need a complex and expensive hi-fi setup—speakers, amplifier, pre-amplifier, a digital-to-analog converter, and more—that would cost more than ten times as much. Getting that level of sound out of a speaker the size of a watermelon is an experience that wows both technologically and emotionally—an experience that Da Maia says was the goal of the space.
“[Barneys CEO] Daniella Vitale had a vision to bring a new experience to Barneys, which is already an iconic and forward-thinking store,” Da Maia tells us. “Barneys has always been a pioneer in fashion, bringing forward undiscovered designers and offering clients something completely new and revolutionary. Devialet has the same mindset. It takes precision, dedication and passion to make both the world’s best clothes and the world’s best speakers. It’s not about selling one product—it’s about bringing a new concept to life and changing the way people listen to music.”
And that change extends far beyond the listening room and into clients’ homes. “We get feedback from people who already own the Phantom that they listen to music again like they used to,” Da Maia beams. “They listen to full-length albums. It’s not just background music—it becomes an activity of its own. It becomes something to share with family and friends. Whatever the technology or device, ultimately no music will ever sound as good as it does in the comfort of your own living room.”
