Opening the doors to our brand new Chelsea flagship store this month—located in the original location of the first ever Barneys—sure has made us nostalgic. As a result, this season more than ever, we’re celebrating our longtime relationship with New York City. From the grit to the glamour, from uptown to downtown, and all the colorful personas that bring the city to life—our latest campaign is a tribute to it all.
“Our Town” is the latest in a series of Barneys campaigns shot by Bruce Weber. In the past, these have included last season’s “Better Than Ever,” which highlighted diversity of age, background, and ethnicity among women; “Brothers, Sisters, Sons, and Daughters,” focusing on the transgender community; and “L.A. Stories,” featuring an array of Angelinos.
Weber first fell in love with New York as an NYU film student. “Life in the city was so freewheeling then,” says the iconic photographer. “As I now took photographs and films of my beloved city [for this campaign], I could still feel its embrace, and a tear ran down my cheek for a love once lost and again found.” In “Our Town,” he captured iconic destinations like Katz’s Delicatessen and The Carlyle Hotel and brought them to life with a mix of local New York personalities including Lady Gaga; Yoko On; Bobby Cannavale; the New York Fire Department’s first female battalion chief, Rocky Jones; four of the six Angulo brothers from the acclaimed documentary The Wolfpack; and so many more. Below, we share some highlights from the campaign.
