When we’re looking for our daily fashion fix, we head over to one of our staples, The Blonde and The Brunette. Started in 2010 by LA-based duo Kathryn Lebowitz (The Blonde) and NJ Goldston (The Brunette), the blog features up-to-the minute fashion and beauty trend reports.
The girls are true fashion insiders with ties to all of the big brands, so it’s no surprise that they’ve turned their blog into an award-winning site with followers in more than 110 countries. We caught up with NJ and chatted about the best fashion advice she’s ever received and her own fashion rules to live by.
What inspired you to start the blog?
A very special invitation from Prada to the F/W 2010 runway show made me realize it was time to start a new journey. The concept of my blog quickly evolved into “your quick daily dose of fashion, style and beauty,” and it includes things like documentation of my meetings with designers all around the world.
How would you describe your personal aesthetic?
I always go for clean, modern lines with a touch of the unexpected. I’ve dubbed myself an “embellished minimalist.” I’m also very into black and white. However, my New Year’s resolution was to add more color to my wardrobe. No more photos of me dressed in all black!
What is the best advice you have ever received?
My mother gave me this advice and it’s been my fashion mantra ever since: “Don’t buy things just for a special occasion. Buy something because you love it, and it will be ready to go when the moment arrives.” It’s a great way to live your fashion life. It leaves you open to all sorts of possibilities as opposed to being tied to specific events.
If you were accidentally locked in Barneys New York overnight, what would we find you wearing in the morning?
What is the most coveted item in your closet at the moment?
A navy Dries Van Noten skirt from his Fall 2013 collection. I wore it to the dinner in his honor at Barneys CEO Mark Lee’s penthouse.
What are your top five style rules to live by?
1. Find your uniform. Cultivate your look. It’s great to have a signature style that reflects your identity inside and out.
2. I’ve always loved Audrey Hepburn’s famous motto, “I just do my thing.” It’s the foundation for all my personal choices.
3. Sometimes less is more, but Alber Elbaz once told me, “Sometimes more is more.” I’ve embraced that fact that it’s not always fun to play it safe.
4. If you feel comfortable then it’s age appropriate. If you don’t, don’t do it!
5. When in doubt, go for the coat or the bag. They make a statement and they almost never go out of style.
Where do you go for style inspiration?
Everything around me inspires me, but the runway shows and street style really drive my visual and personal aesthetic. I love the mash-up of personal style as opposed to the highly orchestrated celebrity red carpet looks.
What items are at the top of your spring fashion lust list?
Anything pink including a dreamy Givenchy leather top and all the new lipstick shades. I’m also lusting for anything shiny and sequined.
