Meet Geri Hirsch. You might have seen her recently in this very cool shoppable video in which she transformed the everyday black dress into four killer looks.
But this L.A. tastemaker goes way beyond fashion. Her versatile blog, Because I’m Addicted, runs the gamut from food and art to home décor and DIY tips (we just learned how to fashion a neon canvas mouse pad with our own two hands…). And her repertoire doesn’t end there—Geri is also behind the upcoming LEAFtv, an online platform that will educate independent, stylish gals on everything from design to cooking. Always one step ahead of the pack, you must wonder where she gets it all.
Well, you’ll have to take that up with her. All we know is that this is one addiction we don’t want to kick.
What inspired you to start LEAFtv?
Growing up with a working, single mom meant that I had to figure out quite a bit on my own. I realized when I went off to college that “figuring everything out” doesn’t get much easier, and it only accelerates as you get older. I want LEAF (Living, Eating and Fashion) to become the brand that bridges the “figure-it-out” void. It’s a project that inspires and educates women to do it all, from design to cooking to style, through cool, informative short-form videos.
What inspired the everyday black dress video?
Being obsessed with 80s movies. We had a very “Mannequin” moment while bopping around a closed Barneys New York flagship store at 7 a.m. Not sure if it was the lack of caffeine or the uber-stimulation of being in the presence of the stunning clothes, but it pretty much wrote itself from there.
What are your top styling tips for spring?
Patterns, textures, mean accessories and color, color, color—all at the same time.
Which look from the video is your favorite?
I love them all, as each look represents a different girl, and I identify with all of them. If I had to choose just one, it would be the first. I’m a sucker for a good maxi dress and anything Isabel Marant. And I live in those Alexander Wang boots.
If you could lunch with any Barneys New York designer, who would it be?
That’s like asking to choose your favorite child!
If you could raid anyone’s closet, whose would it be?
I’d have to say the stylists Estee Stanley, Cher Coulter, Kate Young, Petra Flannery, et al. They’ve got the goodie goodies.
Who are your style icons?
The usual skittles—Diane Kruger, the Olsens, Kate Bosworth, Kate Moss, Leandra Medine and of course, all the stylists I named above.
What is the most coveted item in your wardrobe at the moment?
I just got the pre-fall 2008 studded ankle boots from Chloé. I know I’m a little late, but those bad boys were impossible to get your hands on.
If you were accidentally locked in Barneys, what would we find you wearing in the morning?
I would stuff myself with the bagel chips and cream cheese from Barney Greengrass. Then, I’d escape inside the store and try on everything from the first, second and third floors. On the search, of course, for the Proenza Schouler PS1 Pochette Raffia (1), Bottega Veneta two-tone ankle cuff sandals (2) and the Maiyet gold large botanic cuff (3). And after some serious shopping, I would fall asleep lathered head to toe in La Mer.
