As busy as they come, Carolyn Hsu is not only the co-founder and editor of The Daily Obsession, a six-year-old lifestyle site that covers topics from fashion to travel, she is also the stylish voice behind The Hsu Closet (best title ever), a personal style blog that spotlights her current cravings. If you’re someone who likes to be in-the-know, we suggest taking a peek at both.
We’ve had our eye on Carolyn for quite some time, so you can imagine how psyched we were when she took the time out of her jam-packed schedule to chat with us.
How would you describe your personal style?
Polished—I’m a bit of an uptown girl. I tend to invest in designer pieces that have staying power. When it comes to trends, I try to interpret them and fit them into my existing style rather than changing my look with every fad of the moment.
What items should every woman have in her closet this spring?
Color is huge this season, and my favorite is marigold. Whenever I wear it—whether a coat, pants or shirt—I always get compliments about how vibrant and rich the hue is. I love how this Mark Cross bag has a classic shape, but is made modern by this great color.
What’s in your makeup bag at the moment?
Koh Gen Do’s cleansing water cloth for when I need a quick makeup change on the go, or occasionally the lazy gal’s face wash. It’s extremely gentle yet effective. Bobbi Brown’s shimmer brick in bronze—the one staple I have in my bag season after season. Clé de Peau’s extra silky lipstick (the best lipstick on the market, I believe) and foundation. The serum-like formulation absorbs quickly and makes my skin glow, while providing essential moisture. And NARS cream eyeshadow—it’s the best for building color and touching up when needed without a brush.
What is the best fashion advice you have ever received?
Coco Chanel said it best: “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.” I don’t think that more is always better, and I admire people who can convey their sense of style without trying too hard.
Whose closet would you love to raid?
Lauren Santo Domingo. She’s got the perfect Park Avenue polished wardrobe paired with an eye for what’s cool and trendy.
What is the most coveted item in your closet at the moment?
I’m ready for warm weather and I can’t wait to wear this new Rochas silk slip dress I just scored. This is my first Rochas buy, and I’m quickly becoming obsessed!
If you were accidentally locked in Barneys, what would we find you wearing in the morning?
You would find me wearing this fabulous Lanvin dress (3) with these Nina Ricci cutout sandals (1) and paired with this Monique Péan necklace (4). I’ll also be wearing the gold berbère ring from Repossi (2), which I’ve been eying for ages. Get me to a Barneys New York right away!
