Whether he is translating the tragic romance of Romeo and Juliet to modern times, re-inventing the modern musical while whisking you to the Quartier Pigalle of turn-of-the-century Paris, or lifting the curtain on the sparkling wickedness of 1920s New York, director/writer/producer Baz Luhrmann’s work never ceases to dazzle. Together with his wife, costume and production designer Catherine Martin, the astoundingly creative duo spend their lives creating world after rich, beautiful world.
This holiday season, Barneys New York is pleased to present BAZ DAZZLED, a multi-platform holiday extravaganza in collaboration with Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin.
“From the very early days of our love affair with New York, Barneys has always been, for us, one of the city’s iconic destinations,” Luhrmann and Martin said. “Perhaps this is because the Barneys aesthetic is somewhat similar to our own—taking the traditional and turning it a little on its head. Of course, there is the honor of being asked to join the ranks of the previous collaborators, but really in the end it is about living, creating, and being part of the fabric of New York City.”
Original and exclusive BAZ DAZZLED Holiday artwork by Luhrmann and Martin creates a whole new magical world filled with fantastical characters, woodland creatures, ice skaters, snow owls, and candy canes, all in the spirit of the duo’s motto, “A Life Lived in Fear is a Life Half Lived”—which appears on the BAZ DAZZLED Holiday crest. “When CM and I started our company, Bazmark, we somewhat ironically, in our own logo, quoted the Australian coat of arms,” said Luhrmann. “It seemed only fitting, as coats of arms figure frequently in our work, and we have one for our own company, that we would try and create our own holiday crest that incorporates the BAZ DAZZLED spirit for the Barneys holiday campaign.”
BAZ DAZZLED will be brought to life in the Madison Avenue flagship windows, as well as throughout the store and in special events throughout the season. Barneys New York has also collaborated with the pair on an XO Exclusively Ours collection of limited-edition holiday gift products, including ornaments, children’s costumes and toys, tabletop accessories, throws, and more. In the spirit of the holiday season, Barneys New York will donate 25% of sales of all BAZ DAZZLED Holiday products to Room to Read, a global organization that seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.
Decadent, fantastical, modern, and stunningly imaginative—the magic of the holiday season will soon be seen through these visionary eyes.
