As an L.A.-based stylist, I’m an early bird. As soon as my alarm goes off around 5:45am, I’m answering emails, making sure all of my shoot pulls are going through before European offices close around 9am. I also travel a lot for work, and today I am in New York for my own photo shoot with i-D and my friend Lil Yatchy’s concert.
For a shoot, I’ll usually go in something comfortable and casual. My uniform consists of loose pants, a cool belt, a tank top or bodysuit, and sneakers or boots. If it’s cold, I’ll wear a jacket too. I have a small frame, so something with some structure—the bigger, the better. I have over 300 pairs of sneakers, but today I pulled on these black and white Balenciagas. I wasn’t a fan of them at first because everyone is wearing them, and I like to do my own thing, but as soon as I tried them on, I got it. Not only do they feel amazing, but they go with anything, and as slip-ons, they’re perfect for when you need something super on-the-go. I always want to be as comfortable as possible for a long day on set.
For L.A., I’d stick to sneakers and my casual, cool vibe, but when I’m in New York, I always like to wear more daring, conceptual pieces, such as my Margiela Tabi boots, because New Yorkers get it. In L.A., people would be like “What are those?” But New York people understand and respect them.
My personal style is a mix between high fashion and street. Since I am from South Central, I have that part of my history, but I am also a girl with dreams, so I love Chanel. I’m really inspired by my friends, and I am forever inspired by Pharrell, Aaliyah, and Missy Elliot. My goal is to look that fly every day and have all the confidence in the world. I was pretty shy when I was younger, but when I started discovering clothes and style, I felt like I didn’t have to talk as much. My clothes could speak for me.
After I meet up with friends, we usually change to go out for the night. I’ve been styling Lil Yatchy, and tonight he has a show, so we’re going to go support him. Whenever my friends and I get ready together, we always walk out in the same aesthetic, which is either ‘90s girl group or super New York, like, high-waisted jeans, t-shirt, belt, leather jacket, and cool boots. Either way, it always starts with “What shoes are we wearing?” and the looks will develop from there.
For a night out, I love these Dries Van Noten denim boots. They’re slightly surprising without being loud, and I like how they break up this tonal outfit. I didn’t want to do brown on brown or black because it’s an easy out, and even this denim plays like a basic while adding new texture and color.
I am not much of a partier, so I’m usually in bed on the earlier side. I try to meditate every morning and night, which consists of a Buddhist chant. Everything started for me when I was working at RSVP Gallery in Chicago, and when I came back to LA, my first client was Kendrick Lamar. It’s been going ever since, so I’m all about attracting positive vibes and getting clarity. From there it’s lights out.
