She may be known for her namesake line of sophisticated yet whimsical fine jewelry, but Jennifer Meyer slips easily into her latest role as womenswear designer. That sense of ease is contagious as she graciously models her designs for us on a typically mild clear blue sunny day in her hometown of Los Angeles. After the success of her first collection, which was the result of our long-standing partnership with the brand she founded over a decade ago, Jen is back with a fresh assortment of flirty dresses, perfectly distressed denim and leather jackets, never-want-to-take-them-off tees, and one plush cocoon coat—all available exclusively at Barneys New York.
In celebration of the encore Barneys New York XO Jennifer Meyer collection, we sat down with the designer at one of her local haunts, the Chateau Marmont, as she entertained our request to share her favorite looks. And of course, we had to capture a few wrist stacks and sparklers along the way. After all, what’s better to complement a Jennifer Meyer outfit than some Jennifer Meyer jewelry?
“I try to design jewelry that women feel comfortable wearing all day, every day, any time of year…for school drop off, a lunch with friends, or a night out. I wanted to create the same feeling with this clothing collection,” she shares with us. “Classic, timeless styles that span the seasons and can really be lived in and worn for years to come is the ethos of everything I design—be it a necklace or dress.”
As living proof her brand’s DNA, it was easy for Jen to mix and match each dress and jacket, tee, and denim we had on set. It’s all interchangeable and nothing is fussy or tricky to style. Her approach to the project with Barneys was to make sure the outcome of the collection included all the pieces she would want to wear all of the time. “Everything can be dressed up or down with shoes and jewelry, depending on your mood, which is something that I always look for in the clothing that I buy.“
Constantly inspired by the exact environment surrounding us on our shoot today—California casual, iconic, with touches of femininity—Meyer’s personal aesthetic shines through in everything she does. And while we were hard-pressed to get an answer on which piece is her favorite in the collection, Jen did share that her ideal leather jacket needs to be “soft, worn-in, and the perfect length to wear with jeans or over a cute dress. I think this one accomplished it perfectly!”
After a recent visit to Barneys New York’s Beverly Hills location, we got the quick update from Jen, who shares, “Seeing my name on the tags and clothing racks at Barneys is pretty awesome!” We think it’s pretty and awesome, too.
