For more than a decade, Barneys Beverly Hills Personal Shopper Michelle Goodman has been helping an eclectic mix of clients—think musicians, lawyers, actors, philanthropists, and socialites—find looks that they love. The L.A.-based, San Antonio-raised stylist started working in retail when she was a teenager and has been doing personal styling for more than 20 years. “It comes down to the fact that I love putting full looks together,” she explains. “It gives me great satisfaction to see my clients feel great, especially when they go outside their usual box.” Though her racks range as widely as her diverse clientele, they almost always include a clever mix of classic, edgy, sophisticated pieces, and she’ll always incorporate pops of color.
Michelle likes to use party season as an excuse to turn up the volume. “I always approach holiday dressing in a trend-forward way, so this year it was a focus on velvet, sequins, leather, and fur,” she says of the glistening, texture-rich rack of clothes she’s pulled at the Beverly Hills store. Here, she gives us a peek at some of the looks she’s put together for her stylish clients—and the ones she’s eyeing herself!
“I love leopard coats, and this is the best version of the season. Its tailored fit means it’s a lot more flattering than other styles out there. In L.A., my clients will likely drape this over their shoulders, while in New York, it’s the perfect versatile outerwear for parties.”
“As you can tell, I am so into red this season. This jacket from The Row is the perfect shade, because it’s bold but not too bright. It’s also just a truly timeless, forever piece that can make anything feel polished and elevated. This look would work well for a more conservative client, and the Fendi bag adds a fun playful touch. Also, Derek Lam is my go-to for perfect black trousers—they just fit so well.”
“A simple dress like this velvet slip dress demands a festive accessory, which is why I love pairing this velvet dress with a crystal-embellished shoe. The Paul Andrew slides are so great for someone who doesn’t want to wear a big heel but wants the shoe to feel really special.”
“These Bonnie Young pieces look so great together and can also be broken up and styled separately. I love them worn together with the mink wristlet and Saint Laurent platforms—it just exudes a confident, festive vibe. I could see one of my art world clients wearing this to an opening or gala at MOCA or LACMA.”
“A mini dress with over-the-knee boots is such a fun look for an edgier, fashion-forward client. They can easily throw on a leather moto—the Barneys New York XO Jennifer Meyer one is a favorite—to complete the look. For a more conservative client, I could swap out those boots for a pump or velvet ankle boot.”
“This is such a cool and comfortable look for a holiday party at someone’s house or at your own home. The red sweater has a keyhole detail in the back, which is just the right amount of sexy. The Alberta Ferretti slides are perfect for at home entertaining because they feel festive while still having an ease about them.”
“This is a total Barneys New York look, and it just says holidays. A metallic slip dress, satin bag, sumptuous fur—it just feels festive and wintery. My clients will love thow effortless and easy to accessorize this is. Many of them just want easy pieces that they can wear with the accessories they already have, and this slip dress is that.”
“I love white so much, and I love winterizing white. It’s such a fresh hue, especially when it comes to accessories. I can see this look being worn to a more casual get together, like a brunch.”
“This is such a versatile piece, and the kimono vibe is very on-trend this season. I’ve sold this to clients who styled it over black leather pants, and I’ve sold it to women who wore it as a dress. In fact, I just sold it to a women in her forties, who was surprised that it really is long enough to pull off as a classy but playful wrap dress.”
