My favorite kind of holiday party is one that is festive and fun, but casual. There is nothing more stressful than getting dressed to the nines only to venture out in the freezing cold, lugging presents and towing kids. I have therefore banished all formal holiday shindigs from my calendar, and have started cultivating a more dressed-down holiday look.
It started a few years ago with a shiny gold sequin Proenza Schouler tee that was crying out to be toned down. I wore it to a Christmas carol party in Brooklyn with worn jeans and flat brown leather riding boots. The year after, I wore a vintage gold brocade and velvet jacket and chic black evening pants with a Chinatown tee and black Converse All Stars.
I love this way of dressing—so much so that I keep my eyes open all year for little bits of glamour and glitter to ensure that I’m comfortable (yet appropriately celebratory) come December.
