After so many seasons of escalating heel heights (culminating with Lady Gaga‘s 12-inch platforms at the 2011 CFDA awards), it’s refreshing to remember how chic a single-sole black heel can be. Whether it’s a sandal, pump or bootie, on a stiletto or a wedge, this simple style has never looked so appealing.
As I was browsing the new pre-Fall collections on Barneys.com this weekend, a pair of demure open-toe Louboutin wedges caught my eye. I instantly thought of Sofia Coppola, my black shoe muse (I can’t help assigning wardrobe staples to specific style icons). More often than not, Sofia pairs a perfectly simple dress or skirt with classic yet feminine black shoes. Although she has always evoked classic elegance with her personal style, her look is now more relevant than ever.
